The Seven Developmental Areas

1. Spiritual - The most important gift that The Hope Center can offer an urban youth is a strong relationship with Christ. We recognize that growing up in the inner-city presents the kids with many tough issues. By openly and honestly discussing these issues within a safe, Christian environment, we hope to provide a Christian perspective that penetrates into their everyday lives and decisions. The Mentoring Bible Study is designed to help LIT youth mature and live a Christian life.

2. Educational - Nearly all of the kids involved in the LIT program are severely behind in school. Because we believe that a solid comprehension of literacy (reading, writing, and speaking) is a catalyst towards growth in other academic areas, leaders assist the youth throughout the week with their literacy development. There are also time slots available for the kids to receive help with their homework in other subjects. Despite the challenges that the kids face in education, we believe that great changes can occur by improving their learning one or two steps at a time. Learn more about the Literacy Workshops.

3. Character - Character is “who you are when no one is looking.” Without a strong character, it is impossible to be a successful leader. The Leaders In Training program teaches its youth character traits that are vital to their success. Topics include: developing a hard work ethic, serving others, practicing humility, respecting others, thrift, and more. Read more about our Character Development class here.

4. Leadership - The goal of The Hope Center’s ministry is to develop urban youth into successful adult leaders. To help kids prepare for his, we invest heavily in their leadership development. In our leadership class, LIT participants learn about leadership principles and receive challenging opportunities to put their leadership knowledge into practice.

5. Life Skills – The Hope Center offers monthly life education classes. Topics such as sex education, home economics, public speaking, etiquette, career opportunities, resume writing, interview skills, and other pertinent issues are taught. Learning these practical life skills within a Christian environment is an important piece of the leadership development process. Learn more about life skills classes and job shadowing.

6. Interpersonal - It is vital for urban youth to develop interpersonal skills that lead to Christ-like relationships. LIT participants work at increasing their ability to communicate with others, learn conflict resolution skills, practice forgiveness, share their feelings and beliefs, and more. Since successful leadership centers on the ability to have strong relationships, LIT youth receive ample opportunities to develop strong relationships with adult leaders and their LIT peers.

7. Recreational - Athletics are an excellent forum for the kids to practice and develop their character, interpersonal, and leadership skills. Such qualities as discipline, strong work ethic, and teamwork are vital for any athlete to possess. Currently, the kids have recreational opportunities through sports camps, clinics, and daily recreational periods. These activities lay the foundation for future programs and athletic leagues. We hope to someday develop our recreational opportunities further by building a gym.
